The Up- and Downsides of Nutritional Products

Hidden Dangers And Harmful Chemicals In Supplements! Maltodextrin, Steroids, And Many More.

We at OneChoice strive to provide safe and effective products that prioritize your health and well-being by not using two common ingredients found in many nutritional products: maltodextrin and steroids. These harmful substances negatively affect your health if consumed excessively or without proper caution, causing digestive issues, disrupting hormone levels, and potentially increasing the risk of autoimmune diseases, severe infections, and even cancer. While some of these substances are excessively used in the health and nutritional market, it’s important to be aware of their potential dangers by choosing transparently labeled products with high-quality ingredients to achieve optimal nutrition and enjoy a healthy lifestyle.*

The modern supplement and food industry relies on various additives and ingredients to enhance product shelf life, appearance, and taste. However, some of these substances, such as maltodextrin and steroids, carry risks we want you to know about. In this article, we will shed light on the hazards of these substances in our everyday foods, providing scientific insights to raise awareness and encourage informed choices.

Maltodextrin

Maltodextrin

Maltodextrin is a semi-synthetic carbohydrate usually derived from GMO corn, rice, or potato starch. It is produced by using strong corrosive acids and hydrolytic enzymes, which are, in most cases, GMOs. It’s shockingly often used as a thickener or filler in nutritional products and food because it’s inexpensive and easy to produce. However, maltodextrin has a high glycemic index (106 to 136), about 2x higher than table sugar, which can cause spikes in blood sugar levels.

This can be especially problematic for people with diabetes or managing their weight. Maltodextrin can also cause digestive issues like bloating, gas, and diarrhea. Nevertheless, emerging evidence suggests that maltodextrin enhances pathogenic bacterium Escherichia coli adhesion to the intestinal mucosa, destroying microvilli and promoting dysbiosis of gut microbes, subsequently leading to inflammatory bowel disease (e.g., Crohn’s disease). It also stimulates the growth of dangerous bacteria like Salmonella and Bacillus cereus. Moreover, maltodextrin impairs intestinal mucus release, which can increase the risk of colitis.

And that’s not all; in agriculture, maltodextrin is known as an effective pesticide whose safety has not been evaluated in humans yet.

It may be labeled under different names depending on the manufacturer and the country of origin:
  • Glucose polymer
  • Modified food starch
  • Corn sugar
  • Wheat sugar
  • Rice syrup solids

Steroids

Steroids are a type of hormone that can have both positive and negative effects on the body. Some people use steroids illegally to enhance athletic performance or to build muscle mass. Still, they can also have serious side effects, such as liver and kidney damage, high blood pressure, and increased risk of deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, heart disease, and stroke. In addition, steroid use can lead to hormonal imbalances, which can cause a range of issues, including decreased libido, mood swings, severe acne, increased body hair, and even infertility. Steroids are typically not listed as an ingredient in nutritional products, as they are not legal to use for nonmedical purposes in many countries.

In addition, many manufacturers make claims about the ability of their product’s active ingredients to enhance or diminish androgen, estrogen, or progestin-like effects in the body but contain steroid-like substances and synthetic hormones related to the male hormone testosterone.

  • Androstenedione is a hormone that is converted to testosterone in the body. It gained popularity in the 1990s as a supplement that could enhance athletic performance, but was later banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency.
  • 19-nor androstenedione is a prohormone converted to nandrolone, a steroid hormone. Several sports organizations have banned it due to its potential for misuse.
  • 20-Hydroxyecdysone (ecdysterone or 20E) – a naturally occurring ecdysteroid hormone that controls arthropods’ ecdysis (molting) and metamorphosis.
  • Stanozolol – a synthetic steroid derived from testosterone

While many nutritional products are safe and beneficial when used as directed, there are a few additional substances that may be considered unhealthy or controversial when used in encapsulated supplements:

However, concerns have been raised about their long-term health effects have been raised, including potential links to cancer, metabolic issues, and gastrointestinal problems.

TITANIUM DIOXIDE

This compound is used as a colorant and opacifier in some supplement capsules. Some studies have suggested that it may have negative health effects, particularly when inhaled as a fine powder.

CARRAGEENAN

Derived from seaweed, carrageenan is used as a thickener and stabilizer in various food and supplement products. Some research has linked it to gastrointestinal inflammation and other digestive issues.

PROPYLENE GLYCOL

Some encapsulated nutritional products use This synthetic substance as a solvent, humectant, and emulsifier. It has been associated with potential health risks, including skin irritation and allergic reactions.

1,4-DIOXANE

This synthetic substance is primarily used as a solvent in manufacturing pharmaceuticals, veterinary drugs, and natural health products; for research and development; and as an analytical reagent for laboratory use. The US Environmental Protection Agency considers 1,4-dioxane a probable human carcinogen, and the National Toxicology Program listed it as an animal carcinogen.
